Have you ever heard of an animal called a lemming? Perhaps you have heard the term used in High School. A lemming is a small rodent that is found in the Arctic tundra. Folklore (though not true) holds that lemmings commit mass suicide. In the middle ages, people thought they actually fell out of the sky. History goes that if one lemming runs off a cliff, the rest will run off the cliff simply because they are blindly following the animal in front of them. This popularized the derogatory term “lemming” to refer to anybody who blindly follows another human being or idea without ever stopping to think for themselves. In one sense, we are all “lemmings.” We are all following someone: athletes, politicians, celebrities, religious leaders, friends, or just ourselves. Jesus calls us to follow Him, and to a large degree “blindly” or as we like to call it, by faith. Does following Jesus make us a lemming? I suppose only if it leads to our death. However, if it leads to life, perhaps we are the only ones who are truly seeing. I choose to follow Jesus.
