Preparing this sermon, it occurred to me that good accounting principles and Christian love are incongruent. A good accountant will be intentional to keep a detailed record. He/she will be sure to properly balance accounts payable and accounts receivable. If money is owed to a company, the accountant makes sure the company collects. If the company owes a debt, the accountant ensures the company doesn’t use that money. This is a very productive and needed entity in the business world; however, not so in the Christian community in regards to our love for one another. If we have wronged someone or they have wronged us, neither of us want to live in each other’s debt. Keeping a detailed record of wrongs only hinders our ability to move forward and love, because we are always waiting to collect payment for the wrong suffered. If there is one disability that love should posses, it’s dementia towards wrongs suffered. An accountant needs to have a good memory and attention to detail. Christians, in regards to their ability to love, do not. Forgiveness and forgetfulness always lead to freedom.
