Did Jesus come and die to make us happy?

One of the most interesting questions regarding why did Jesus come and die is this: “Did Jesus come and die to make us happy?” I think the answer to this question is yes and no. What dictates the answer is the object of the happiness. Why would Jesus want to make us happy? Blaise Pascal said, “All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.” Is this statement by Pascal true? I think it is. But we were created for one purpose and one purpose only: God’s glory, not happiness. So why would God give us all one universal desire to be happy, and then tell us our only duty and purpose in life is to glorify Him? Perhaps the means by which we gain our greatest happiness is glorifying God. If heaven is the business of doing nothing else but glorifying God, then I must surmise that heaven is the business of being happy in God.
