Discovering Hypocrisy

I had 2-3 instances in the past week where God revealed to me my hypocrisy. I was actually really encouraged by God taking the time to do so. I think many people would say that someone pointing out hypocrisy in us is not encouraging at all. But here is why I find great encouragement in God (or anybody else for that matter) pointing out hypocrisy:

1. Hypocrisy is often, if not always, something we are blind to. Therefore we need God and people to reveal it to us. This means they must be willing to take the time to care about us and I am always encouraged when someone takes the time to care.

2. Hypocrisy leads to judgmentalism, self-righteousness, and pride. And nobody wants to be a judgmental, self-righteous, prideful person. So when God or someone points out hypocrisy, it will always enable us to show more grace and be more humble. And that certainly is encouraging.

3. Hypocrisy ultimately stems from having too high a view of self and too low a view of God. Pointing out hypocrisy realigns our thinking about God and self. And I am always encouraged by anything that causes God to increase and us to decrease.

I feel very loved by God when His Holy Spirit points out hypocrisy in my life. I hope you do as well and I pray that you are encouraged by God taking the time to care, enabling you to show grace and humility, and making much of Him and less of us.
