I had to take my car in this week to get an oil change. I strongly dislike going to any automotive shop, even for just an oil change. Why you ask? Because they always try to sell me on something–you need a Transmission Flush, you need a Power Steering flush. I wouldn’t mind them suggesting these services, if I trusted them, but that’s the problem–I don’t trust them. I don’t know them or their character, so I don’t trust that they have my best interest at heart. I think sometimes this happens with God.
God tells us we need these things–to read our Bible, give, love people, give up idols, pray, step out in faith–and often we don’t do them because ultimately we don’t know if we can trust Him. In the same way that I don’t trust the mechanic that I really need a Trans Flush, we often don’t trust God when He says we need prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and confession. What would it take for me to trust the mechanic? Get to know his character or talk to somebody who does know his character.
The beauty is we know God’s character. He has revealed Himself to us through His Word, His Son and His Spirit. God has proven that His character is trustworthy. So whatever God is asking of you–whatever he is calling you to do or not do–I can personally testify, that you can absolutely trust Him. He will never mislead you and He always has your best interest at heart.
