It is often reported that 50% of marriages in the United States end in divorce. Though this is most likely an embellishment, the numbers are certainly not lower than 33%. For you non math whizzes out there, that’s 1 out of 3 marriages. Interesting enough, what is the divorce rate among those who profess to be born again Christians? 33%. Why are so many people, Christians included, getting divorced? There is only one explanation: an absence of Christ-like love. The most common reasons given for divorce are: fell out of love, grew apart, communication difficulties, financial difficulties, lack of commitment, failure to resolve conflict, and differing priorities. But doesn’t love have the ability to overcome all of these reasons? Even the most common (and perhaps the most difficult) reason, infidelity, I would posit love is able to overcome. Let me encourage you that whether you are married now or one day might be married, make a commitment to love your spouse, no matter how difficult it may seem. Christ-like love is our only safeguard from becoming a statistic.
