In preparing today’s sermon I attempted to find the most outrageous celebrity boast. I kept coming back to one in particular: “I invented the internet” by Al Gore. I did some research to see if Al Gore did in fact ever make this claim. Truth is in an interview with Wolf Blitzer in 1999 Al Gore said: “During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet.” What Al Gore meant was perhaps a partial truth, however Al Gore never said he “invented” the internet. The point of this story is that even if something is true (or even a partial truth) when we “toot our own horns” we typically find ourselves misrepresented, misquoted, and judged. The Bible says, “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. The more words, the more vanity, and what is the advantage to man” (Prov. 10:19 Ecc. 6:11). May our words be few and our boasts only in the cross of Jesus Christ.
