Have you ever been hungry? Not just a little hungry, but really hungry? What is the only thing you can think about? What is the only concern you have right then and there? Food. Most of us, when we are hungry, don’t stop to knit a sweater before we eat. We don’t think to read a book, play a game, or pull weeds in our garden. If we are hungry, we typically have one priority–getting food. When we are physically hungry, most of life seems to fade into the background of our stomach’s beckoning. When we are spiritually hungry, is the same true of our soul’s beckoning? The spiritually hungry person is consumed with only one priority–food for the soul. And he or she doesn’t stop to knit a sweater before eating. Why? Because nothing matters right then as much as our need for our souls to be fed. Do our souls get the same attention as our stomachs? They should. They are far more famished. When was the last time our souls needed God like our stomachs needed food? Tis blessed to be weak, needy, and hungry. For only then do we run to God to fill us up.
