Stronger, Craftier, Smarter

When Jesus was led to the wilderness to be tempted for 40 days, there is a very real typology of Adam and Christ that we see. Let’s compare/contrast each instance. Adam was sinless. Jesus was sinless. Adam was a son of God. Jesus was the Son of God. Adam was in a lush garden. Jesus was in an arid wilderness. Adam had every comfort and pleasure. Jesus was surrounded by wild animals. Adam had a beautiful wife by his side. Jesus was all alone in the desert. Adam had all the food he desired. Jesus went 40 days with no food. Adam was tempted once. Jesus was tempted for 40 days.

As we can see, Adam had all the makings to defeat temptation and Jesus had none. Yet it was Adam who gave in to temptation, not Jesus. What do we learn from this? No matter how good our life is, no matter how strong we are, we cannot defeat temptation in our own power. Satan is much stronger, craftier, and smarter than we are. But we can defeat temptation “for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” Jesus accomplished what Adam and we are unable to do.
