Watch What You Watch

I was surveying the most popular/watched TV shows over the past few years and it occurred to me that not one single show in the top 15 was about a healthy family, marriage, or anything of the like. The premise of the top 15 shows is as follows: talent (3), crime (6), unusual friendships (2), dysfunctional families (2), and medical/sex (2). What is it about singing, murder, sex, and crude joking that makes it so entertaining? Why is a TV show about a mom and a dad raising their children and teaching them values no longer entertaining? How much of this mentality is influencing the church and can any of us really quantify this influence? The world will certainly rejoice over wrongdoing and we cannot expect them to rejoice in truth. However, how much are we as Christians rejoicing over wrongdoing in the things we watch in movies and TV? Should we rejoice in a show about people having sex before marriage simply because it’s a cool show? Should we rejoice in a show about two gay men raising a family simply because it’s funny? We are called to rejoice in truth and truth alone. May we be different.
