Big Church, Small Church

Growth in numbers can bring a lot of benefits to a church but it can also bring some hindrances. One of these is the availability of church members to stay connected to one another. The Megachurch phenomenon over the past 25 years has brought incredible resources and ministries to the global church, yet it often leaves members feeling disconnected from one another. Although we make up 16% of the Megachurches in America, the typical pattern has been for Southern Baptist churches to remain small. This gives every church member an opportunity to serve one another and use their gifts in a unique way. Though we are a small congregation, this should not inhibit us from being used in the body; it should actually promote a greater desire for us to be used. Megachurches allow the church to meet everyone’s need. Small churches allow everyone to meet the church’s need; and we should consider that a privilege.
