Giving is one of the most difficult personal theologies to discover. When should we give? How much should we give? To whom should we give? Why should we give? What should we give? All of these questions, and more, have been asked by anybody who bears the name of Christ. We have the example of Zacchaeus giving half of his possessions away to the poor–but does that mean I need to give half my possessions to the poor? We have examples of the church in Acts selling their homes and bringing the proceeds to the apostles–but does that mean I need to sell my home and bring the proceeds to Pastor Matt? :) How are we to make sense of our money? How do we know the balance between wisdom and generosity? Is it wise to save our money or is it stingy? Is it generous to give away our money or is it foolish? I believe the main difficulty we have with all these types of questions is that there is no universal, standard answer. We actually have to pray to receive these answers. We actually have to be led by the spirit to know what to do. Go figure.
